The Kommunale Kino at the Künstlerhaus Hannover curates a programme that includes many retrospectives and different thematic series. When looking back at film history in so doing, the dominance of the male gaze becomes very apparent. In order to give a platform to new films by women on the one hand and shine a spotlight on female voices from film history on the other, the Hanover cinema year is focusing on the “Female Gaze” in 2025.
On March, Arsenal on Location arrives in Hanover and presents a series of avantgarde experimental films and features by women from the Arsenal collection in collaboration with the Kommunales Kino im Künstlerhaus. The programme of short and feature-length works includes films by Maya Deren, Ulrike Ottinger, Bette Gordon, Lizzie Borden and Babette Mangolte from 1943 to 1991 which will be screened in various formats (16 mm, 35 mm, digital).
