Kino im Sprengel was founded in 1988 in connection with the squatting of the former Sprengel chocolate factory when independent filmmaking using video and Super 8 was at its peak. In 1992, the cinema collective converted a former workshop space into a cinema, continuing to refine it over the years. People at the cinema work for free. The program has always presented a mix, comprising political and artistic films, as well as works from the margins of cinema. The annual programs have often received awards; in 2016, Kino im Sprengel was the first cinema to receive the newly created Lotte Eisner Prize.

The collection of the National Film Institute of Guinea-Bissau was almost completely destroyed during the civil war but a small part of it was digitized as part of Arsenal's “Animated Archive” project. The Portuguese director Filipa César was instrumental in rescuing the material and collaborating with local artists, which is also reflected in her films, of which we are showing a small selection.
