Klick Kino: On Location

In our second month as nomads and with some initial experiences about being on location already under our belt, Arsenal is exploring the meaning of the term “on location” with and at Klick Kino and starting a small series of films that were themselves shot at real locations in Berlin. Whether in relation to aesthetics, content or directorial decisions, the reasons for shooting scenes, sequences or entire films in public spaces are as varied as the very works created along the way. Surprising interplays emerge here: places inscribe themselves into films, just as these places often appear in an entirely new light in the films in question. What dynamics are set in motion by shooting films on location, in the fresh air or being closed doors that exist in real life? What influence does public space have in terms of what happens in front of and behind the camera with regards to its unique aesthetic, social or political underpinnings or ultimate unpredictability? When do film shoots on location become artistic interventions into public order? As long as Arsenal remains on location, the series at Klick Kino will be exploring such questions and others like them and discussing them with the respective directors wherever possible. We’re setting the ball rolling with three films that map out the Berlin of the late 70s and 80s, three attempts to reclaim public space and three guests: Helke Sander, Rudolf Thome and Peter Kahane.
