Cycles, series, serials – of all the multi-part series of works revolving around a thematic or aesthetic center, the trilogy is a particularly popular and frequently used formation among artists, composers, authors and, last but not least, filmmakers. Whether it was decidedly designed as a trilogy, given the label afterwards, or left unfinished: Our film history program presents various cinematic three-acts by Michelangelo Antonioni, Chantal Akerman, James Benning, Djibril Diop Mambéty and others, to focus on a specific phenomenon that lies between commercial interest and artistic expression.
