Hungarian Neo-Avantgarde in Film

The Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (CHB) is presenting its exhibition “Magyar Neo-Avantgarde in den 1960er/1970er Jahren” until January 27, 2023. At the center are works by artists of the Hungarian neo-avantgarde, which include a series of films that can be seen on-site and at Arsenal on January 28 and 29.
After 1960, Hungary's unofficial art scene discovered the avant-garde movements of classical modernism for itself and at the same time became involved with contemporary international trends. The art of the "second public sphere" was characterized by formal, technical, and theoretical progressiveness, as well as by the removal of boundaries between genres. Filmmakers strove to renew the language of film, and the legendary Balázs Béla Film Studio provided a space for experimentation.
Two programs will give an impression of the artistic variety.
