Austrian Harald Röbbeling (1905–1989), now an all-but-forgotten contributor to German-language film history, was one of the early directors of the satirical DEFA short film series DAS STACHELTIER. Having begun his directing career in 1947, he made films such as Asphalt (1951), set in contemporary Vienna, and Der Weg zu Dir (1952), set in post-WWII Hamburg, both inspired by neo-realism. Röbbeling arrived at the East German DEFA studios after his Bürgertheater in Vienna went bankrupt in December 1953. Of the seventeen eight-minute STACHELTIER shorts he made for East German cinemas between February and August 1955, eight can be screened, included the satire IMMERTREU, which was banned after it was made.
