The ONE WORLD BERLIN Film Festival for Human Rights and Media is being held for the fifth time. This year's focus is on the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We are opening the festival with the winners of the "All Human Beings are Free and Equal" short film competition (20. & 23.11.). In addition, we will show films about current human rights challenges: the Kashmir conflict (PROJECT KASHMIR, 22.11.), peacekeeping missions (SLEEPING MONSTERS, 21.11.), freedom of the press in Russia (ANNA, SEVEN YEARS ON THE FRONTLINE, 23.11.), and the potential of culture to solve conflict (SLINGSHOT HIPHOP, 21.11.). CHICAGO 10 (22.11.), BALUTY GHETTO (24.11.) and BOMB HARVEST (26.11.) look at past civil and human rights violations as well as their consequences today. A small retrospective presents films that influenced the discourse about human rights: LA BATTAGLIA DI ALGERI (20.11.) examines the right to armed struggle in the context of the Algerian independence movement. HAMSIN (26.11.) is one of the first Israeli films to present a cliché-free image of Palestinians. Both the form and content of (25.11.) deal with Islam and integration. NICHT DER HOMOSEXUELLE IST PERVERS, SONDERN DIE SITUATION IN DER ER LEBT (22.11.) helped spark the gay rights movement in West Germany and serves as a bridge to another focus of the festival: the human rights situation for gays and lesbians around the world. The Russian gay and lesbian movement's fight to asserts its right of assembly is the subject of EAST/WEST-Sex&Politics (24.11.).
Directors, human rights experts and other guests will accompany the program with talks and discussions. Further information can be found in the program guide or at www.oneworld-berlin.de. (Natalie Gravenor)
