The film and video series curated by Maria Morata deals with public and private spaces and their correspondences, disruptions and differences. With experimental films, videos and documentations of artistic actions and interventions from the 1960s until today, the film series presents various artistic positions in regard to individual and collective behaviour in public and private space.
After the first block At Home shown in December, the second block In The Street in January will reflect on public space as both a product and an object of social relations that constantly reproduce and change the social conditions of their production, as Henri Levfebre describes it in his in book La production de l'espace from 1974.
The selected works essentially concentrate on the projection of the individual in public space as well as on his or her ability to change and reinterpret it. The works of the program Regardez-moi (Jan. 6) operate with provocations and aim at creating breaks in the homogenous perception of everyday things. Therefore, the adaptation and subsequent manipulation of collective behaviour patterns and the generally acknowledged elements in social space through the artists enable an analysis of their meanings and effects. The program Appropiations (Jan. 13) is dedicated to these aspects. The program Doing Something (Jan. 20) questions to what extent art is able to create relational spaces that can be commonly used by different individuals, whereby collective use can be temporary (passers-by in the street) or permanent (neighbourhood), and individuals can be included in the artistic action in public space in a more or less active way.
