THE PERILS OF PAULINE (Donald Mackenzie, USA 1913/14) counts as
the very first thriller in the history of film. Pearl White – born in
1889 – was a circus rider before becoming a heroine of adventure-film
series. The serial gives an account of the adventures of a rich heiress
pursued by an adventurer keen on her fortune, while noble Harry is
unable to dissuade her from the perfidiousness of his rival. Only in the
20th chapter can the guilty one be revealed – until then Pearl White
herself is engaged as a detective. Vaginal Davis, expert in silent movie
stars, presents eight sequels with breaks to enjoy drinks in the foyer –
musically accompanied by John Blue. (Dec. 22 - changed date!)
