It has rarely occurred that a 15-year-old schoolgirl without ambitions to become an actress be-came famous as quickly and lastingly as Karin Baal. Chosen more by chance for the role of Sissy as the partner of Horst Buchholz in Georg Tressler's Film Die Halbstarken (Teenage Wolfpack, 1956), she went on to remain the incarnation of a fresh, self-confident, and disrespectful girl for years. After playing the role of the resistance fighter Anna Lederer in Fassbinder's Lili Marleen in 1979, she was rediscovered by the directors of New German cinema. She lent contour and character even to supporting roles, e.g. in the films of Reinhard Hauff or Thomas Brasch.
