Silent movie expert Vaginal Davis presents FOOLISH WIVES (USA

1921 / 22). Like all of Erich von Stroheim's movies, his first

"one-million-dollar film" also consists of fragments of an overlength

version that was never shown in the movie theaters. Monaco: A con man

with a Russian aristocratic name lives off of women and money

laundering. He seduces the wife of the American ambassador. The "Count"

is ultimately struck dead by the father of his mentally retarded rape

victim and "disposed of" in the gutter. (Sept. 5)
