The internationally renowned Israeli filmmaker, video artist and activist Avi Mograbi is currently one of the guests of the DAAD's Artists-in-Berlin program. A resolutely political filmmaker, in all his works he casts a critical eye on the role of Israel in the Middle East conflict without ever, however, refuting the complexity of the situation. A very singular mix of shrewdness, humor, anger and self-reflection forms the basis of his works.
His most recent documentary Z 32 (Israel/F 2008) is about the recollections of a young elite soldier who participated in an Israeli army revenge campaign in which Palestinian policemen were killed. Guilt, responsibility, repression, forgiveness as well as the position of the filmmaker himself are the subjects for debate. Z 32 bears witness to the consequences of a military logic as well as the dilemma that comes about from seeking a new form of representation. (May 5, in the presence of Avi Mograbi)
