CORROBOREE (Ben Hackworth, Australia 2007) The young actor Conor has an engagement in the countryside. Together with several actresses, he is supposed to re-enact scenes from the life of Joe, a critically ill theater director, according to exact instructions. The atmosphere is more spring-like than morbid, and Conor increasingly gets his bearings in the house - a kind of spiritual hotel - and in Joe's life. If one thinks of Schiller's concept of play instinct and grasps it as the connection of sensuous feelings and mental understanding, then CORROBOREE is a playful film in the best sense, and one wishes that the director may never grow up. Daily at Arsenal from Jan. 20 through 26.
