To coincide with the start of the new school year, we are also beginning the second jour fixe program as part of our "What is Cinema?" film education series for school children and teachers. A large number of films from different countries and eras as well as a range of workshops and guests will form the focus of the events to be held in the upcoming months, which will take place in the morning of the third Friday of each month. We start on September 16 with the film UNTER KONTROLLE (Under Control, Volker Sattel, Germany 2011), which reveals the full spectrum of nuclear activity in Germany. The camera travels through control rooms, reactor halls and storage depots, focusing on the efforts made to minimize risk. UNTER KONTROLLE describes a version of the present that still existed at the time of its premiere at the 2011 Berlinale. Fukushima however, changed everything before the film made it into cinemas - an unexpected event that makes the critical questions posed by the film all the more relevant. Volker Sattel will be attending the screening.
