Paris is a city which everyone can imagine regardless of whether or not they've actually been there, not least due to the numerous films that have left their mark on the myth of the city and the images, ideas and fantasies which surround it. Arsenal is presenting a wide-ranging program which explores unusual cinematic views and aspects of the French metropolis, inviting audiences to take a city tour of a quite special nature which encompasses documentaries, essay films and artistically ingenious works of fiction. Alongside several historical rarities, the program draws heavily on current films from the 21st century, many of which are Berlin premieres.
This homage to Paris put together by Arsenal is taking place as part of the French Film Week to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the city partnership between Paris and Berlin. The series is being opened by the new film by great documentarian Frederick Wiseman, which has yet to be shown in Berlin and explores the world famous Paris variety show "Le Crazy Horse", advertised as "the best nude show in the world."
