Greenland Eyes, which is in Berlin for the first time, presents Greenland's current film and cultural scene. The festival's eyes are not only trained on ice. Green Eyes aims to give an insight into today's Greenland that goes beyond common representations of an almost uninhabited desert of ice and "Eskimo exoticism" to reveals a complex society. For in Greenland – as is clear from the selected films – nature and culture, spectacular landscapes and urban spaces, seal hunting, and PlayStation are all connected. Moreover, the world of the older generations as the protectors of traditions is intertwined with that of young Greenlanders, whose understanding of fashion, music and dreams of the future are similar to those of youths all over the world. Greenland Eyes wants to offer this young Greenland a forum. Film production has only existed there for a few years and a large part of the filmmakers are self-taught, often working as producers, directors and actors. The Berlin audience will have a chance to see films that have mostly not been shown in Germany – some have not been screened outside of Greenland at all. Thus Greenland Eyes offers an international stage, a place for taking stock and a meeting place for many actors in the Greenland film Industry. There will be introductions and debates as well as a roundtable discussion (28.4) with all the filmmakers who are present, allowing films from and about Greenland to be set within a wider cultural context.
