On to the Past – Back to the Future. The technical side of Living Archive
We learned a lot from the project. About digitalization, restoration and the fluid border in between. We found new partners and discovered with them how the state of available material bears witness to the history of a film. Questions arose: How do we deal with German subtitles which are the reason for the survival of a copy at Arsenal but are now in the way because of digitalization? How can we rescue a collection of material found in Guinea-Bissau which is plagued by vinegar syndrome? How can we rethink our technical infrastructure so that our future approach to the archive is responsible but also within the realm of the feasible? Thilo Gottschling (ARRI Film & TV Services), Rainer Meyer (KORNMANUFAKTUR) and Arsenal and Berlinale co-workers will give their views on the technical challenges of the project and their experiences.
