On 2nd February, the DEFA Foundation is screening two films by the director Roland Steiner, who recently celebrated his 65th birthday. The documentary UNSERE KINDER (GDR 1989) let young skinheads and neo-Nazis express themselves for the first time in a DEFA film, asking about the causes and motives for their development. The first film about right-wing extremists in the GDR was also the last. One of the interviews with the youths was conducted by the author Christa Wolf (1929–2011). PETER ZADEK INSZENIERT MAJOR BARBARA (D 2009) is about the great German theater director Peter Zadek (1926–2009). Roland Steiner accompanied him during rehearsals for his last play at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. This is a fascinating insight into how Zadek's production of George Bernard Shaw's "Major Barbara" came about. (jh) (2.2.)
