New cinema meets "old" DEFA films – Alice Agneskirchner: to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the founding of DEFA, the DEFA Foundations is inviting important young directors to present a DEFA film that has impressed and influenced them. The starting point of ZWEI DEUTSCHE(Gitta Nickel, East Germany 1988) is two photos of 15-year-old child soldiers from the Second World War, which became iconic of the seduction and desperation of a generation. The director asks the two protagonists decades later about their different experiences and life paths on both sides of the Wall. Two documentary films by Peter Voigt explore childhood and youth in the Third Reich in sensitive fashion. In STEIN SCHLEIFT SCHERE (East Germany 1986), Voigt sketches out his life as a boy in occupied Poland and reflects on his view of fascism as a child. In KNABENJAHRE (Germany 1989), he speaks to men from his generation about being educated under National Socialism. (jr) (2.5.)
