Recent cinema meets "old" DEFA films - Bernd Sahling presents: On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the foundation of DEFA in May 2016, young directors are invited to present a DEFA film that particularly impressed and inspired them.Bernd Sahling, who has directed documentary and feature films about children and youths, will present two children’s films by Helmut Dziuba that treat racism and political persecution during the Weimar era and under the Nazis. ALS UNKU EDES FREUNDIN WAR (GDR 1980) is a sensitive adaptation of a children’s book about a young boy called Ede and a Sinti girl called Unku, who have to defend their friendship in Berlin during the 1920s against massive resistance and prejudice even from their own families. In JAN AUF DER ZILLE (GDR 1986) the 13-year-old son of a communist sets off in 1934 to find his father who is rumored to have been killed to avenge a murder. He meets tag-alongs, Nazis and unexpected helpers. (jr) (6.6.)
