The History of Documentary Film at the dffb I: Juvenilia and Film
Micky Kwella’s graduation film from the Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb), THOSE IN THE STREET,was a joint project realized with a group of young people from ayouth home in Schöneberg. Made over the course of two years, the film documents how young people can slide into juvenile crime, with the youths playing the characters themselves; this gave them the opportunity to confront their own pasts. During shooting it became clear that the film would not be yet another "problem film" about schools, but rather the reenactment of experience. THOSE IN THE STREET was shown in the International Forum of Youth Films at the 1981 Berlinale. (ft) This is the opening film in a series of FilmDocument events on the history of documentary film at the dffb. (16.1.)
