Sudanese filmmaker Gadalla Gubara (1921–2008) shot films from the 50s until his death with which he documented the political and social development of Sudan over more than 50 years. His cinematic legacy was able to be digitized in 2013 and 2016 by Arsenal with the help of funding from the Foreign Office’s Cultural Heritage program. Now Arsenal presents his first feature TAJOUJE (Sudan 1979, 22.11.) from his oeuvre, which was shot in one of the most remote regions of Sudan and is based on a famous Sudanese love story. His final film LES MISÉRABLES (Sudan 2007, 23.11.), which will be shown at SAVVY Contemporary, was shot by Gubara at the age of 87 with the help of his daughter Sara Gubara, who we will also be welcoming to the screening of the film. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. (nk)
