The third public archive screening as part of the re-selected project proceeds from the critical idea that archives are always the means and media of a particular power. American literary scholar Saidiya Hartman talks of the “promiscuousness” of archives, which may permit a variety of different readings to spring up, but do not however bring those to life which the archive has kept quiet about. With this in mind, how can films be discussed which seem to turn against the power of the archive while still within it? Films by Abigail Child, Robin Curtis, Brenda Longfellow, Bernard Stone, and Aldo Tambellini will be discussed, which offer themselves in different ways as counterstories and in the most cases as HERstories. re-selected is a joint project by Arsenal and the Oberhausen Short Film Festival as part of “Archive außer sich”.
