Between 1953 and 1966, a state censorship committee existed in West Germany which was responsible for checking the content of all Eastern European films. Over 100 East German films (DEFA and DDR Television) were some of those affected by censorship in this way. The databank on the censorship of East German films in West Germany developed at the Hannah Arendt Institute (Dresden) has for the first time compiled all the films from East Germany which were checked by the “Inter-Ministry Committee for East-West Film Questions”. Following the presentation of the project by film historian Andreas Kötzing, three films from 1956 affected by censorship will be shown: Heiner Carow’s documentary MARTINS TAGEBUCH and Hugo Herman’s animated film TRÄUMT FÜR MORGEN. In the second part of the evening, they will be followed by János Veiczi’s directorial debut ZWISCHENFALL IN BENDERATH, which warns of a return to anti-Semitism in West Germany. (jh) (1.10.)
