In the 11th millennium, opposing nobles battle for power in an outer space colonized by humanity. The desert planet of Arrakis, known as Dune, has a particular significance, because the coveted spice, a consciousness-expanding drug which extends life expectation, can be mined there and nowhere else. David Lynch’s adaptation of the science fiction novel of the same name DUNE (USA 1984) by Frank Herbert brings together an illustrious star ensemble: alongside Kyle MacLachlan, who made his feature debut here before becoming famous with Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks, are Dean Stockwell, musician Sting, Max von Sydow, Jürgen Prochnow, Sean Young, who had recently gained fame for Blade Runner, and Silvana Mangano in her penultimate big-screen role. The soundtrack is just as heterogeneous, which was played by Brian Eno and mainstream rockers Toto. We are showing a contemporary 70-mm-magnetic sound print. (hjf) (12.12.)
