By contrast to the DEFA studios, the Konrad Wolf Film and Television Academy was tolerant of experiments and new subjects. Documentary films about working environments in the GDR are some of the most interesting rediscoveries. In DER ELEFANT VON HOYERSWERDA, Christian Lehmann observes construction work in Hoyerswerda, where a residential district for the workers of the “Schwarze Pumpe” gas works is emerging. Gerhard Wille’s MONTAGEBRÜDER gives an unadorned insight into the living and working conditions of assemblers at the “Nordlicht” natural gas pipeline. SUSIS SCHICHT by Petra Tschörtner shows a young female worker at a SERO recycling facility. In DÖSCHERS, Hannes Schönemann portrays a combine harvester brigade on Usedom. IMBISS by Thomas Heise gives an insight into daily routines at an “Automat” fast food restaurant on Alexanderplatz.
