Peter Kahane belongs to the last generation of DEFA directors finally able to realize their own film projects shortly before the Fall of the Berlin Wall. We are showing VORSPIEL (1987) and DIE ARCHITEKTEN (1990), both of which were made based on scenarios by Thomas Knauf. In VORSPIEL, 17-year-old apprentice Tom (Hendrik Duryn) dreams of his one big love, which he seems to have come across in the form Corinna (Susanne Hoß). In order to impress her, he suddenly turns his attention to acting. DIE ARCHITEKTEN is an unflinching swan song to East Germay. The nearly 40-year-old architect Daniel Brenner (Kurt Naumann) receives a large commission for the first time: he’s supposed to design the cultural center in a new Berlin high rise quarter. Numerous problems and the mistrust of his bosses means his innovative ideas end in failure. The film was already conceived in 1987, but only received its premiere when the critique formulated within it had already partly become obsolete. (jh) (1.7.)
