Despite all internal and external struggles, the pedantic high school professor Rath (Emil Jannings) falls in love with the cabaret artist Lola Lola. Their relationship triggers scorn and eventually costs him his job. Nonetheless, the two marry and tour the country with the cabaret troupe. When his last savings have been used up, Rath is forced to perform with the troupe as a clown. The situation escalates during a stop in his hometown. With this adaptation of Heinrich Mann novel, director Josef von Sternberg brought Marlene Dietrich her international breakthrough. Filmspotting will be screening this Weimar classic DER BLAUE ENGEL almost 90 years to the day after its original premiere on 1st April1930. Silke Ronneburg will introduce the film and say a few words about the Deutsche Kinemathek’s Marlene Dietrich Collection Berlin, which she runs. (ah) (30.3.)
