To conclude the retrospective of the exceptional French filmmaker, we are showing MR. X – LE CINÉMA DE LEOS CARAX (France 2014) by Tessa Louise-Salomé—a portrait of Carax’s cinema with many film excerpts and comments by actors, colleagues and critics, including Denis Lavant, Juliette Binoche, Kylie Minogue, Serge Toubiana, Kent Jones, Caroline Champetier, Harmony Korine—as well as the insane trip through Paris HOLY MOTORS (France/Germany 2012), in which the mysterious Monsieur Oscar (Denis Lavant) is driven through the city in a white stretch limousine by his chauffeur (Edith Scob). On the back seat, he keeps changing costumes, thus becoming an industry boss, a contract killer, a beggar, and a monster. On the roof of the “La Samaritaine” department store, Eva (Kylie Minogue) sings him a song full of yearning while looking at Pont Neuf. A fulminant rush of images—and a film about cinema, from Marey’s photography series to digital motion capture techniques. (bik) With the friendly support of the Institut français. (1.12.)
