The grandmother asks hers granddaughter “Do you want to know why it snows?” and tells her the story of Edward Scissorhands before bed: many years ago, an old inventor (Vincent Price) lived in a dark castle atop a mountain, his favorite project being to create an artificial human being. At exactly the moment when he wanted to give his art project human-like hands, he suffered a heart attack and died and Edward (Johnny Depp) had to make do with five half-meter long pairs of scissors at the end of each arm. One day, an Avon lady comes to visit the lonely Edward and takes him home with her to the candy-colored estate of detached houses at the foot of the mountain. There, the shy outsider soon becomes a star attraction for the conservative suburban community - until their fascination for his extravagant hedge and hair cutting skills flips over into hatred. We are showing EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (USA 1990), Tim Burton’s vision of the role of the artist in society, on a contemporary 70mm print. (hjf) (26.1.)
