From Beirut we can find a new reading of the 1953 film Les statues meurent aussi (Statues Also Die) by Chris Marker and Alain Resnais. Today our statues continue to die, stones made blank by the winds here – amidst the regional turbulence and its residual effects on our ancient ruins and artifacts, destroyed or disappeared. Broken inhabitants of the National Museum of Beirut remind us how frail these stones, and our history, can be.
