There are several institutions taking part in the long-term Arsenal project “Archive außer sich”, slated to last until 2020: Both the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen and SAVVY Contemporary house archives of different characters, which organically arose from their many years of work as a festival or an art space and continue to have an effect there. The Harun Farocki Institut uses an artist’s estate as a platform for new projects that analyze past, present, and future visual cultures. The project “Film – Feld – Forschung” established at silent green is dedicated to the archive of images and the Earth through exhibitions, workshops, and events. The film production pong is working through the archive of the Hamburg journalist, editor, and moderator Navina Sundaram as a witness to the history of media and migration in West Germany.
Halfway through the project’s four years, the participating institutions and projects will not only share their themes, but also indicate the joint discussion, exhibiting the complexity and variety of the discourse around the archive to be defined over the further course of the symposium.
