A sequence by Griffith from 1916’s INTOLERANCE. There are numerous forms of montage: naturally, the wide shot, the varying camera angles, shot-reverse shot, parallel montage, leaps in time across many decades. But one sequence is especially notable. It seems like it could even be the invention of the shot-reverse shot. Or that its repeated association is meant to confirm something one wasn’t yet sure of. This sequence is like one of those animals that only exist to provide an example for the validity of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. But cinematic Darwinism is neither right nor wrong.

Harun Farocki (1944–2014) is considered one of the most important and internationally influential German filmmakers. He was an author, dramaturge, stage director, and film school lecturer. ZUR BAUWEISE DES FILMS BEI GRIFFITH was part of the first edition of Forum Expanded in 2006 and was exhibited again in the 2019 Forum Expanded exhibition. His films were often featured at the Berlinale.
