The critic Inácio Araújo recently wrote: “Restored at 50 years old, IRACEMA is the most contemporary film in the country.” I can't help but agree with him. The restoration revealed nuances and details that enhanced the film's strength and complexity. Edna is an extraordinary actress who takes us through an Amazon that no longer exists and must not be forgotten.

Depicting the Trans-Amazonian Highway realistically in 1974 represented a great risk. The consequences were years of censorship and an incessant struggle to bring the film to the audience it was always intended for. IRACEMA shows, today, a reality that remains as urgent, if not more so, than it was at the time, when the highway still symbolized a dream of a “great Brazil”.
