9. – 30. June on arsenal 3.
In a programme with FAKE SOLDIERS.
A trio of Turkish cabaret artists: shadow puppeteer Mahmut, singer Zeki and belly dancer Çiçek unite for a German tour in 1982. Over a decade later, after Mahmut is killed in a traffic accident, Zeki is tasked with reuniting his mannered, pre-pubescent daughter Şenay, who grew up with her single father in Hamburg, with Çiçek, the mother she never knew. Like the cacti that she carries around with her on the journey, Zeki is spiky; he has no intention of getting to know this girl who calls him “uncle.” The road movie carries this odd couple on a musical journey that takes them ever further away from Hamburg while bringing them closer together at the same time. Much of DIE AUSLANDSTOURNEE takes place in the Turkish nightclub scenes of Amsterdam, Paris, Wuppertal, Stuttgart and Munich, giving an ironic twist to the title: to a non-Turkish-German audience, these parts of Europe might be entirely foreign. An irresistible coming-of-age and coming-out story about the non-traditional families we choose in our homes away from home. (Karina Griffith)
