Germany has experienced a number of racially-motivated murders since the mid-1980s. The crimes are linked to the names of places in both the east and west: Mölln, Solingen, Lübeck, Guben, Eberswalde… It’s a long list.
This film explores various examples of these terrible occurrences in detail. In unadorned fashion, Mala Reinhardt gives voice to the victims’ loved ones. But it becomes apparent that many questions regarding what actually happened remain unanswered. This is one reason why a network of migrant initiatives and relatives of those murdered decided to stage a mock tribunal to “dissolve the NSU-complex” at the Schauspiel Köln theatre in May 2017. Several extracts are included in the film. On stage, Auschwitz survivor Esther Bejarano rages against politicians and the judiciary: “At a time when buildings are burning again, politicians openly make racist statements, the AfD is elected under the guise of democracy, and such acts are dismissed as new and isolated, we are not at the start. We are right in the middle!” The fact that there have been more racist murders since confirms this. (Enoka Ayemba)
Mala Reinhardt, born in 1989 in Wiesbaden, Germany. She studied ethnology as well as directing and works as a director and producer of documentary films in Berlin. Her films have been shown at various international festivals.
