It’s high summer in a typical German estate of terraced houses. It’s home to Xhafer, a pharmaceutical engineer with Kosovan roots. His German is excellent, his wife is a white German academic, they have three children together. He discovers a dead rat wrapped in cloth in his front garden. Important information from his work is withheld from him; his job is sabotaged; he is made to look like a fool in front of his colleagues. Is his wife cheating on him? Or is it he who is pushing her away? The heat hangs heavy on him. His shirt is drenched with sweat. Is Xhafer being discriminated against and bullied, or is his behaviour simply insufferable, and what is happening has nothing to do with his background, as his wife wants him to believe? As he searches for answers, he risks losing himself in the corridors of his workplace and behind darkened windows – his place of exile.
Director and screenwriter Visar Morina forges a trippy narrative that is richly atmospheric, exploring perceptions of alienation and marginalisation. EXILE gives a multi-layered account of the fragility of a German mainstream society that believes itself to be open and modern. (Biene Pilavci)
