Ohne wirklich Fotograf zu sein, hat Boris Lehman viel fotogra-fiert und besitzt viele Fotos. Die meisten von ihnen – fast alle, es sind schätzungsweise einige Hunderttausend – liegen in Schachteln, in Umschlägen, in Kommoden. Geschützt vor Lichteinfall und Staub. Gefangen. Erstarrt, Gefangene auf Zeit, wie tot oder als würden sie warten. Mit 50 Jahren hat Boris Lehman beschlossen, einen Film über diese Fotos zu machen. Aber wie soll man sie zeigen? Welche Auswahl soll man treffen? Zuerst einmal muss man kramen, Schachteln öffnen, nachschauen, was sich darin befindet. Ein ganzes Leben eingesperrt in einer Schachtel? Die Vergangenheit taucht wieder auf, man spricht mit den Bildern, und die Bilder sprechen mit uns. Die vergessenen oder verschwundenen Menschen erwachen zu neuem Leben. “Ohne dass ich es beeinflussen könnte, entziehen sich mir die Fotos, sie entziehen sich die ganze Zeit. Sie entschwinden, als würden sie von irgendetwas angezogen, von der Kamera vielleicht, wer weiss? Es gelingt mir einfach nicht, sie zu zeigen. Ich stehe mit dem Rücken zur Wand und werde bald den Boden unter den Füßen verlieren. Ich weiß. Dieses Mal werde ich Ihnen mein Leben erzählen. Nein, ich erzähle es Ihnen doch nicht. Es sind die anderen, die von mir erzählen, und ich erzähle das Leben der anderen. Ich bin wir, sind wir uns da einig?” Boris Lehman
   
1) Though not really a Photographer, Boris Lehman has taken large quantities of photos. The vast majority, estimated at several hundred thousand, are stored in boxes, envelopes and cupboards, protected from light and dust. Waiting to be displayed or published, waiting for someone to ask for them. At the age of 50, Boris decided to make a film about them. But how to show all that? What to show?
2) First of all, examine them, open the boxes, see what’s inside. A whole life shut up in a box? The past rushes back, we speak to the photos and they speak to us. People forgotten or deceased start to relive for us. 3) Should I put some order in my life? I can only show my chaos.
4) The photos have a will of their own, they slip through my fingers, they get away all the time. They fly off, as if sucked up, perhaps by the movie camera itself! I don’t< manage to show them.
5) I am up against the wall, and will soon lose my foothold. I’m only too aware of this.
6) I tell you my life story. I don’t tell you my life story.

Boris Lehman, geb. 1944 in Lausanne. Studium an der Brüsseler INSAS. Filme seit 1963, im Forum u.a. Babel – Lettre à mes amis restés en Belgique (1992), Mes entretiens filmés (1999), A comme Adrienne (2000).
