Sogobi ist Teil der Kalifornischen Trilogie, die das Forum erstmals geschlossen vorstellt. James Benning begann sie 1998 mit El Valley Centro, einem ländlichen Porträt Kaliforniens, dem er Los folgen ließ, das großstädtische Gegenstück über Los Angeles, und schließlich Sogobi, den Blick auf die kalifornischen Landschaften. James Benning: „Sogobi ist ein schoschonisches Wort und bedeutet ‘Erde’. Der Film Sogobi wurde in der kalifornischen Wildnis gedreht: überflutete Salzmulden, verbranntes Land, ein tobender Fluß, schneebedeckte Bäume, ruhiges Wasser, ein windiger Passweg, gigantische Mammutbäume, der Truckee River, wild wachsende Wüstenblumen, das Yosemite Valley, eine verwahrloste Reklametafel, leichter Regen, ein massiges Frachtschiff, Gebirgsnebel, ein Sandsturm im Death Valley, Morgenfrost, ein Militärkonvoi, Antelope Valley, schoschonische Felszeichnungen, ein Schneesturm in der Sierra, eine unbefestigte Straße, der Kern River, ein Holzverladekran, Cholla-Kakteen, ein Steinbruch aus Zement, Vieh, ein Güterzug aus Santa Fe, die roten Felsbrocken der Alabama Hills, Rauch, ein Salzzerstäuber, die San Andreas-Verwerfung, schwarze Eichen, und die Überlaufrinne am Berryessa-See. Ich verbrachte ein Jahr am Ende der Welt, und vielleicht bin ich dort dem Porträt eines wahren Orts-Gefühls am nächsten gekommen. Es ist ruhig. Es ist laut. Es ist heiß. Es ist kalt. Es ist windig. Es ist windstill. Es ist feucht. Es ist trocken. Es ist überall. Es ist nirgendwo. Es ist Kalifornien. Es ist Wildnis.“
   
Sogobi I began The California Trilogy with El Valley Centro in November of 1998. Nearing the completion of this film, I began planning an urban companion piece, Los, that was to be a portrait of Los Angeles. As soon as it was completed I added Sogobi to make it a trilogy, the urban and rural portraits needed the Californian wilderness to put them in perspective.... Sogobi is a Shoshonean word meaning “earth.“ Sogobi, the film, was shot in the California wilderness – a lonesome coastline, tangled live oaks, flooded salt pans, burnt land, a raging river, snowcovered trees, still water, a windy pass, giant sequoias, the Truckee River, desert wild flo-ers, Yosemite Valley, a desert billboard, light rain, a massive container ship, mountain fog, a Death Valley sandstorm, morning frost, a military convoy, Antelope Valley, Shoshone petroglyphs, a Sierra snowstorm, a barren road, the Kern River, a logging derrick, cholla cacti, a cement quarry, cattle, a Santa Fe freight train, the red boulders of the Alabama Hills, smoke, a salt evaporator, the San Andreas Fault, black oaks, and the spillway at Lake Berryessa. I spent a year in the middle of nowhere and perhaps this is the closest I’ve come to portraying a true sense of place. It is quiet. It is noisy. It is hot. It is cold. It is windy. It is still. It is wet. It is dry. It is everywhere. It is nowhere. It is California. It is wilderness. James Benning
