The Rule of the Game erzählt die Geschichte einiger entmutigter Figuren, die gewillt sind, für Geld zu sterben. Turtle wird von seinem gerissenen Geschäftspartner Will übers Ohr gehauen. Er beschließt, ihn mit Hilfe seines Kumpels Chewy umzubringen. Chewy geht nach der Regel vor: „Töten ist leicht, beerdigen schwer.“ Ein gelungener Mord hängt davon ab, wie gut man ein Loch gräbt. Chewy ist sehr aufgeregt wegen seines Grubenplans. Er hat Werkzeug vorbereitet und eine geeignete Stelle gefunden, während Turtle sich mit der jungen Frau eines benachbarten Restaurantbesitzers beschäftigt. Allerdings weiß Turtle nicht, dass Chewy möglicherweise einen ganz neuen Plan hat. – Der Restaurantbesitzer Ox ist ein professioneller Killer. Sein letzter Auftrag, bevor er in Rente geht, lautet, einen Gangsterboss zu töten. Geduld ist seine größte Gabe. In der Toilette eines Karaoke-Clubs bohrt er ein kleines Loch in die Wand und wartet in der Kabine daneben drei Tage lang auf sein Opfer. – Während Will den nächsten Betrug ausheckt, ahnt er nicht, welche Gefahr ihm droht: nicht nur von Turtle, sondern auch von seiner Geliebten A-Mei. „Dieser Film handelt von der Sehnsucht und der Ironie der Angehörigen meiner Generation in Taiwan. Wenn das Loch gefüllt ist, wird es zum Grab. Vielleicht sollte Chewy sich selbst ein Loch graben, ein gut geplantes Loch, in dem er bequem und würdig ruhen kann.“ Ho Ping
   
Deep in the woods on a foggy night, a body is being buried. Flashback to three days ago. Turtle is tricked by his sly business partner Will. He decides to knock him off, with the help of his enthusiastic pal Chewy, who has a rule about killing: “Killing is easy; burying is difficult.“ A successful murder depends on how well you dig a hole. Chewy is very excited about his digging plan, maybe too excited. He prepares tools, finds a good spot, and even watches the door while Turtle is banging the young wife of a restaurant owner nearby. Only Turtle doesn’t know Chewy might have another plan. The restaurant owner Ox is a professional hit man. For his last assignment before his retirement, he kills a gangster boss. Patience is his best quality. He drills a tiny hole in the restroom at a karaoke club. Sitting in the next room for three days, he waits patiently for his target to show up. Wait, shoot, get paid, and go home. That’s the rule for being the number one killer. While Will is planning another business scam, he is unaware of a dangeous threat facing him, not just from Turtle, but also from his honey A-Mei.. “The Rule of the Game tells a story of several downbeat characters who are willing to die for money. Chewy is the least greedy one, but has the most serious problem. He is not pursuing money, sex, or even a better future. He has lost all hope and desire... This movie is about the destiny and irony of my generation in Taiwan. When the hole is filled, it becomes a grave. Ho Ping, geb. 1957 in Hsin Chu (Taiwan). Filmstudium an der Syracuse University in New York und Studium der Chemotechnik in Taiwan. Zunächst Werbe-, Fernseh- und Kurzfilme. Spielfilme seit 1990, im Forum: Shiba/18 (1994), Guo dao feng bi /WolvesCry Under the Moon (1998).
