Busi ist eine der wenigen, die ausgewählt wurden, um an einer medizinischen Versuchsreihe am Chris-Hani-Baragwanath-Krankenhaus in Soweto teilzunehmen. Man hat die Hoffnung, dass ihr Baby mit Hilfe der Maßnahmen HIV-negativ auf die Welt kommt. Die junge schwarze Filmemacherin Sibongile entschließt sich, einen Film über Busi zu drehen. Nach den Dreharbeiten möchte sie Busi helfen und bietet ihr an, in ihre kleine Wohnung einzuziehen, die sich in einer wohlhabenden Gegend von Johannesburg befindet. Aber das Zusammenleben gestaltet sich weit schwieriger als zunächst angenommen.
Wa n’ wina Regisseur Dumisani Phakathi erforscht in diesem Film seine unmittelbare Umgebung. Als Protagonist spricht er mit seinen Freunden über Themen wie Beziehungen, Sex und Liebe. So entsteht eine Reise, die die Kluft zwischen der alltäglichen Welt und den Aidskampagnen offenbart, die an den Menschen, die sie erreichen sollen, oftmals vorbei gehen. Wa n’ wina ist ein ungewöhnliches Dokument des Überlebenswillens der mit dem tödlichen Virus infizierten Menschen.
Busi is one of the few people selected to go on a drug trial at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital in Soweto, with the hope of her baby being born HIV-negative. The hospital puts Busi in touch with the media in the hope of publicising their drug trials. Sibongile, a young black filmmaker, decides to make a film about Busi. After the filmmaking process, she tries to reach out and help the girl. Sibongile brings Busi back to stay with her at her small apartment in an affluent area of Johannesburg. But it is infinitely more complicated than she imag-ined and all sorts of problems arise.
Wa n’ wina This is filmmaker Dumisani Phakathi’s exploration of his community. As a protagonist, Dumisani engages with friends to discuss issues about relationships, sex and love. It’s a rock-and-roll journey that reveals the gaps between the world of everyday and the anti-AIDS campaigns that often talk past the very people they are supposed to address. It is the recognition of people’s will to survive in the age of AIDS.
