Kethiwe Ngcobo wurde im englischen Exil geboren, weil ihre Eltern in den frühen 60er Jahren aus Südafrika geflüchtet waren. Die Rückkehr in eine Heimat, die sie in ihrer Vorstellung als ein utopisches Paradies kennen gelernt hatte, wurde für sie zu einer verwirrenden Erfahrung: “Ich habe mich niemals zugehörig gefühlt. Als ich 1994 nach Südafrika kam, hatte ich Schwierigkeiten, einen Platz für mich zu finden. Ich hoffte, von meinen Landsleuten herzlich aufgenommen zu werden. Stattdessen wurde ich als Außenstehende betrachtet. Ich wurde mit Fragen konfrontiert, die ich nicht erwartet hatte. In Großbritannien hatte ich als Exilantin ganz Ähnliches erlebt.”

Kethiwe Ngcobo was born in exile to parents who fled apartheid South Africa in the early 1960s. In 1994, the year that the country became a democracy, her family returned home. But moving back to a homeland Kethiwe had never seen, except in her imagination as a Utopian paradise, turned out to be a convoluted journey: ”I have never felt like I belong. Returning to South Africa in 1994, I found it difficult to find a place for myself. I was confronted with issues I did not expect. In Britain I experienced the same thing, being an exile. And, with hope and expectation, I thought I would be embraced by my people. Instead, I am constantly seen as an outsider.”
