In 1993, the first instalment of this documentary introduced South Africa to a racially diverse group of children from mainly disadvantaged backgrounds. At the time, on the cusp of a new era, their prospects might have seemed bleak but there was optimism in the air. Ten years on, Lederle Bosch catches up with four of the youngsters to see how well they have fared. The New South Africa has provided Tshepo Mmolo with the basics of a house and not much else. Donovan Rhode, now a father of two children, has chosen a life of petty crime. Bolla Conradie has moved out of the neighbourhood. As he predicted in 1993, he is now a Springbok, playing rugby for his country. Heino Barnard, from a working-class white family, wants nothing to do with his family and spends all his time drinking and hanging out with his friends. This riveting and intimate documentary reveals the possible destinies of South Africas next generation portraying who they have become while exposing their fears and expectations of the future. Lederle Bosch, geb. 1964 in Graaf-Reinet/Südafrika. The Devil Breaks My Heart ist sein erster Film. |
