In dieser Adaptation einer traditionellen koreanischen Erzählung geht es um ein junges Mädchen, das in ständiger Angst vor ihrer Stiefmutter lebt. Allmählich tritt das Familiengeheimnis auf grausame Weise zu Tage. Zuerst wird Su-mi davon wach, dass ihr im Traum der Geist ihrer verstorbenen Mutter erscheint, die sich im Kleiderschrank ihrer Schwester Su-yeon erhängt hat. Von da an ereignen sich immer merkwürdigere Dinge. Die Stiefmutter vermutet, dass Su-yeon hinter den unheimlichen Zwischenfällen steckt und sperrt sie zur Strafe in den Schrank. Als Su-mi davon erfährt, eskaliert der Konflikt. Derek Elley: “Eine präzise Inszenierung, die eher auf allmählich sich steigernden Schauder abzielt als auf plötzliche Horroreffekte, und ein Drehbuch mit einigen verblüffenden Wendungen machen A Tale of Two Sisters zu einem eleganten Einstieg in die Welt der ostasiatischen Psychoschocker. Obwohl der Film einige Ähnlichkeiten mit dem Stil japanischer Psychothriller aufweist, kann man durchaus auch eine westliche Parallele zu Stanley Kubricks The Shining ziehen. Auch dort werden schattige Lichteffekte vermieden und entsteht der Horror allein aus der Charakterisierung der Figuren sowie der leicht stilisierten Ausstattung und Farbgebung.”

Two sisters, Su-mi and Su-yeon, return home after recovering from a long illness. Eun-joo, their stepmother, welcomes them; but Su-mi, the elder sister, intentionally avoids her and Su-yeon, the younger sister, betrays a fear of her stepmother. On their first night back, Suyeon sneaks into Su-mi's room saying there is someone in her room. Su-mi wakes up after seeing the ghost of her late mother in her dreams. Strange things begin to happen from that morning on. A ghost haunts the house and the stepmother's bird dies, while Su-mi brings into her room belongings of her late mother, who hanged herself in Su-yeon's closet. Assuming Su-yeon is behind the inauspicious incidents, the stepmother locks her in the closet. When Su-mi learns about the cruel punishment, the conflict between the stepmother and the two sisters gets more bitter than ever. Derek Elley: ”Precise direction that goes more for slow chills than quick frights, and a script with some startling twists, makes A Tale of Two Sisters a classy entry in the East Asian psycho-horror stakes. Though pic is at heart an old-fashioned scarefest largely set in a remote country house, it manages to suspend disbelief without over-taxing the viewer’s patience, and boasts at least one terrific performance, by actress Yeom Jeong-a as a scary stepmom. Though pic has some similarities to the style of Japanese psycho-thrillers, a simpler, Western parallel would be with Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. There’s the same avoidance of shadowy lighting effects, with the horror emerging as much from characterisation and the slightly stylised design and colour.”
