Agadez, eine Stadt in der Wüste. Die Straßen sind schmal, die Häuser völlig aus Lehm gebaut. Bachir und Salamatou arbeiten als Reporter bei der kleinen lokalen Radiostation Nomade FM. Sie streifen durch die Stadt, interviewen ihre Bewohner. Es ist Fastenzeit, und die Religion spielt im täglichen Leben eine noch größere Rolle als sonst. Der Sultan ruft seine Notabeln zusammen. Vor der großen Moschee beten Männer. In einer Koranschule diskutieren Frauen über die Frühehe. Der Schneider Hamza zeigt den Radiojournalisten stolz sein Haus, das er mit modernstem Komfort ausgestattet hat, ohne auf die Vorzüge der traditionellen Bauweise zu verzichten. Die Frauen einer Kooperative teilen den Gewinn der Woche unter sich auf. Christian Lelong: “Wir wollten den Film von Anfang an auf die große Leinwand bringen, weil es ein Film ist, in den man richtig eintauchen soll, und das lässt sich im Fernsehen nun mal schlecht verwirklichen. Wir haben lange an den Bildern gearbeitet und auch am Ton, wir haben Dolby verwendet, um das Gefühl der Weite wiederzugeben, das in Afrika allgegenwärtig ist. Auf diese Weise wird es möglich, dass der Zuschauer über das übliche Verstehen hinaus gelangt: er dringt ins Herz der Stadt ein und teilt das Erlebte mit den Menschen im Film.”

Agadez: a town in the desert. Its streets are narrow, its houses built entirely of mud. Bachir and Salamatou work as reporters for a small local radio station: Nomade FM in Agadez. They wander through the town interviewing its inhabitants. It’s fasting time, so religion plays an even more important role in daily life than it normally does. The sultan calls his notabilities together. Men pray in front of the large mosque. In a Koran school, women discuss child brides. Hamza, a tailor, proudly shows the radio journalists his house, which he has fitted with all modern conveniences without sacrificing the advantages of traditional building. Women in a cooperative divide up the week’s earnings. The courtyards are beginning to fill up. Christian Lelong: ”I didn't want to make a typical television documentary, i.e. a film that tries to teach people something. Instead, I wanted to give the viewer an opportunity to experience everyday situations in the lives of the people of Agadez. After all, these people ask themselves similar questions to those we ask ourselves. So we dived straight into the action in the form of a walk through the town. However, we always stepped away from situations again before they had finished. In other words, there are no complete sequences with a beginning, a middle and an end. The viewer must find his answers and interpret what he sees for himself. We had always wanted to make a film for the big screen because it's a film you really should dive into. And that's hard to do on television. We spent a long time working on the images and the sound, and used Dolby to give the sense of space that you get everywhere in Africa. In this way, the audience can transcend the normal level of understanding, penetrate into the heart of the town and share the experiences of the people in the film.”

Christian Lelong, geb. 1954 in Paris. Studium des Films und der Ethnologie (bei Jean Rouch) sowie orientalischer Sprachen. Dokumentarfilme seit 1994, u.a. Terrain de Vancances (1997), Marcel Mazout, le film (2001), Dioxines sur la vallée (2003).

Pierre Mortimer, geb. 1955, seit 1995 Dozent für Multimedia/ Video an der Hochschule für Architektur in Grenoble. Agadez nomade FM ist sein erster Film.
