Die 14-jährige Kathy lebt zusammen mit ihrer Mutter und ihrem Bruder Danilo in einer Kleinstadt am Meer. Der Vater sitzt wegen mehrerer Raubüberfälle im Gefängnis, aber sie hat die Hoffnung nicht aufgegeben, daß die Familie nach seiner Entlassung wieder zueinander finden könnte. In der Schule lernt sie eines Tages Chemo kennen, einen sensiblen, sympathischen Jungen. Die beiden entwickeln eine intensive Beziehung miteinander. Da bricht die Familie endgültig auseinander, und Kathy sieht sich mit einer wachsenden Einsamkeit konfrontiert. Sie wird in den rauen Alltag einer Besserungsanstalt gestoßen, entdeckt die Geheimnisse ihres Bruders und freundet sich mit dem Transvestiten Nina an. Ein alptraumhafter Leidensweg zwischen Armut, Mißhandlung und Prostitution. Gonzalo Justiniano: “Die Idee zu diesem Film kam mir nach einer kurzen Unterhaltung mit einer jungen Kellnerin im Norden Chiles. Dieses unglückliche Mädchen verfügte über eine beeindruckende innere Stärke, die ihr dabei half, für jedes Problem eine Lösung zu finden. Sie war für mich der lebende Beweis für jenen starken Selbsterhaltungstrieb von jungen Frauen und Männern, die das lateinamerikanische Kino normalerweise nicht zeigt: junge, ziemlich anonyme Menschen, die nicht durch Verbrechen oder Drogen in die Schlagzeilen geraten, sondern die wahre Helden sind, weil sie einen täglichen Kampf um ihre Träume vom Glück führen.”

B-Happy Kathy is a 14-year-old girl who lives with her mother and her brother Danilo in a small Chilean coastal city. Her life is marked by the absence of her father, who is serving time in prison for several robberies; and by the permanent difficulties that she has to overcome day to day. In high school, Kathy meets Chemo, a handsome and sensitive boy, and they begin an intense relationship of mutual discovery. Meanwhile, Kathy’s family is falling apart, and she must face a sudden and growing loneliness. In this coming-of-age process, Kathy experiences the harsh routine of a girls’ reform school; the secrets her brother hides; first love and the first sexual encounter; the bitter-sweet taste of freedom and, in the hot port city nights, she becomes friends with a transvestite, Nina. Nevertheless, Kathy is able to leave behind all the obstacles, and faces the future with a courage and an optimism that, in a certain way, are mixed with faith. Gonzalo Justiniano: "The first idea of this film came to me after a small talk I had with a young waitress in the north of Chile. In this unfortunate teenage girl there was an impressive inner strength that always helped her to find a solution to her problems. She had an overwhelming power to transform the adversity into a mere obstacle, and to go ahead. For me, she was the living proof of the powerful instinct of young women and men that usually Latin American cinema does not show; anonymous young people, who are not in the headlines because of crimes, drugs or cheap fame, but who are the true heroes fighting everyday for their dreams of being happy."
