An Xin arbeitet als Polizistin bei einer Antidrogen-Einheit. Sie ist mit dem Journalisten Tiejun verlobt, aber sie kann sich nicht entscheiden, ihn zu heiraten. Eines Tages trifft sie den charmanten jungen Mao Jie. Obwohl die beiden einander kaum kennen, lässt sich An Xin von Mao Jie verführen. Eine kurze, intensive Romanze beginnt. An Xin ist sich über die Tiefe ihrer Gefühle für Mao Jie nicht im Klaren, fühlt sich aber zu diesem Mann hingezogen, der sie so leidenschaftlich begehrt. Als sie schwanger wird, bleibt ihr keine andere Wahl, als sich von Mao Jie zu trennen. Nun entschließt sie sich, Tiejun zu heiraten. Kurz darauf gerät sie bei einem Polizeieinsatz als verdeckte Ermittlerin in eine lebensgefährliche Situation. Der Drogendealer, den sie im Zuge der Aktion treffen soll, ist kein anderer als Mao Jie. Ann Hui: “Das Buch, das der Handlung zugrunde liegt, enthält alle Elemente, die ich reizvoll für einen Film finde: eine Liebesund eine Familiengeschichte, Schießereien und Spannung. Ich habe versucht, sie mit einigen Popstars und ernsthaften Schauspielern in einem ehrgeizigen Experiment zusammenzuführen. Es war mir wichtig, nicht nur auf der stilistischen Ebene eine tragische Vision des Lebens zu präsentieren.”

An Xin is a drug enforcment agent in the small border town of Nande in Yunnan Province. She is engaged to the journalist Tiejun. While unable to decide whether to marry Tiejun, An Xin meets an extremely charming young man, Maojie. Although they are still complete strangers, Mao Jie seduces An Xin into a brief, deeply-felt romance. While not sure of the depth of her feelings for him, she cannot deny her attraction to this man who has such passion for her. But as a police officer, as a matter of principle and discipline An Xin has no choice but to break things off with Mao Jie, especially since she is pregnant. She decides to marry Tiejun immediately. After her marriage, An Xin risks her life on an undercover sting operation. But it turns out that the trafficker sent to meet her is none other than Mao Jie. Ann Hui: ”The film is based on a popular novel of the same name, written by Hai Yan. I am attracted to the book because of its hugely melodramatic/tragic story. In fact, the love triangle in the middle section fits the bill of a classic tragedy. To put this in a modern setting, especially in faraway Yunnan, with its evocative natural scenery, seems to me both plausible for the audience and a challenge. It also has all the elements that I find most attractive in filmmaking – love story, family drama, police gunfights, and suspense. I then proceeded to try to mix all these elements plus popstars and serious actors in an ambitious experiment: not only a stylistic one, but ultimately in order to present a 'tragic vision' of life which is dear to me.”
