'Macbeth' im Mileu der Mafia von Bombay. Hauptfigur ist Maqbool, die rechte Hand des Mafiabosses Abbaji. Nimmi, dessen Mätresse, hasst ihre Situation, denn sie ist in Maqbool verliebt, welcher der Einzige zu sein scheint, der sie aus ihrer Misere befreien kann. Weitere wichtige Mitglieder der Gang sind Kaka, ein langjähriger Vertrauter von Abbaji und guter Freund von Maqbool, Guddu, der Sohn von Kaka, Sameera, Abbajis Tochter sowie Boti, ein ehemaliges Mitglied einer rivalisierenden Gang, der heimlich auf Rache sinnt. Zwei Polizeibeamte, Pandit und Purohit, leisten der Gang Beihilfe. Von seiner Liebe zu Nimmi und seinem Machthunger getrieben, ermordet Maqbool heimlich Abbaji und ernennt sich zum Anführer der Gang. Die Unterwelt reagiert schockiert. Alle verdächtigen ihn, der Mörder zu sein, aber niemand wagt dies offen auszusprechen. Dann stellen sich jedoch Kaka, Guddu und Boti Maqbools Anspruch auf absolute Vorherrschaft in den Weg. Die Situation gerät außer Kontrolle. Steve Gravestock: “Zumindest hinsichtlich der Musiknummern haben sich Bhardwaj und seine Mitarbeiter, bis auf einige Ausnahmen, an die Gesetze Bollywoods gehalten. Die meisten Musikeinlagen sind in die Handlung integriert und haben einen tendenziell religiösen Charakter. Sektiererische Unterschiede und religiöse Andacht spielen eine große Rolle innerhalb der Gangstertruppe. Aber selbst der Glaube ist nicht frei von Korruption.”

Maqbool 'Macbeth' and the mafia in the city of Bombay. The central character of the story is a man by the name of Maqbool, the right-hand man of mafia boss Abbaji, who has been ruling the crime world for quite a long time. Nimmi, Abbaji's mistress, hates her situation and is in love with Maqbool, who she thinks is the only one who can free her from her misery. Other important members of the gang are Kaka, a longtime associate of Abbaji and a good friend of Maqbool; Guddu, son of Kaka; Sameera, Abbaji's daughter; and Boti, previously a member of a rival gang secretly in search of revenge. Two police officers, Pandit and Purohit, who also predict the future course of the lives of the protagonists, abet the gang. Driven by his love for Nimmi and his lust for power, Maqbool murders Abbaji and declares himself the leader of the gang. The underworld is in a state of shock and all suspect Maqbool to be the perpetrator of this crime, but no one dares say so as now it is he who rules the crime world. Yet Maqbool perceives a threat in the form of Kaka, Guddu and Boti who stand in the way of his absolute supremacy. This leads him to commit more crimes against people who were once dear to him. Steve Gravestock: ”Bhardwaj and his collaborators adhere to Bollywood codes at least as far as musical numbers, but they rework certain conceits. Most of the numbers are integrated into the action and are religious in nature; sectarian differences and devotion figure heavily in the way the gang operates. Even devotion is corrupt here.”
