The film is an unprecedented account of the most notorious and flamboyant domestic terrorist group in American history. Arising in a volatile mix of Black Power radicalism, white guilt and political paranoia, the SLA (Symbionese Liberation Army) set forth in 1973 to ignite a revolution whose time had come and gone. With the infamous kidnapping of media heiress Patty Hearst (who eventually joined them), the SLA set off a media frenzy. Every detail of their spiralling descent into the surreal outer limits of political extremism was publicised. This bizarre spectacle foreshadowed some of the worst excesses of modern TV journalism. A quarter of a century later, the SLA’s extraordinary twoyear crime spree still ranks as one of the preeminent examples of modern media-driven political terrorism. The film includes exclusive interviews with two former members of the SLA. With Neverland, filmmaker Robert Stone takes full advantage of the unique intimacy of cinema to bring into sharp focus the mood of the early 1970s, a mood that inspired the formation of the first radical domestic terrorist cell to become a media sensation in the United States, the Symbionese Liberation Army. The SLA wreaked havoc on the West Coast and our national psyche for over two years, leaving behind a rich trove of paranoid recordings and scores of violent acts that to this day demonstrate just how far out their thinking was. Yet Stone has a keen understanding that context is everything, and within the first reel of his film we get such a profound sense of the times that the reasons behind the formation of the SLA are no longer a mystery.
