Die beiden Möchtegern-Banditen Nishida und Yamasaki wollen eine Bank ausrauben. Es ist ein schicksalhafter Tag für sie: als sie bei der Bank ankommen, macht sich gerade ein anderer Bankräuber mit der Beute aus dem Staub. Und wie das Schicksal so spielt, werden sowohl Nishida als auch der andere Gangster von einem Auto angefahren, und die Beute fällt unerwartet in Yamasakis Hände. Er flieht und stößt dabei mit einer jungen Frau zusammen, die er aus Versehen ersticht.

In der Zwischenzeit töten die drei mit der Murata-Familie verbundene Banditen Kamata, Kaneda und Matsuda - auch rein zufällig - Tachibana, das Oberhaupt des Seiryu Klans. Um alle Beweisstücke loszuwerden und die eigene Haut zu retten, beschließen sie, die Leiche zu vergraben. Doch schon bald erfährt der Seiryu Klan von dem Mord und sinnt auf Rache. Während die Murata-Familie noch überlegt, was zu tun ist, trifft Yamasaki auf sie und bietet ihnen reuevoll das Geld an unter der Bedingung, daß sie ihn danach töten. Die vier machen sich auf den Weg, um die Beute aus dem Versteck zu holen. Doch das Geld liegt genau an der Stelle, wo Tachibanas Leiche vergraben ist…

Anders als in Sabus früheren Filme, in denen die Geschichte vor allem durch Action vorangetrieben wurde, wird in Unlucky Monkey die Handlung durch den inneren Aufruhr der Charaktere bestimmt, die durch eine alptraumhafte Welt voller makabrer Situationen geistern.

Nishida and Yamasaki, two less than confident would-be bank robbers, are heading for the bank they plan to rob. It's a fateful day for them: when they get to the spot it's just to find out that another robber has beaten them to it and is fleeing with the loot. As ill luck would have it, both Nishida and the robber are knocked down by a car and the loot unexpectedly falls into Yamasaki's hands. Yamasaki panics and runs, making his escape via the back-streets. Turning a corner at high speed, he collides with a young woman and accidently stabs her to death. Made a robber and a murderer by a whim of fate, the luckless Yamasaki starts to wander aimlessly through the town. In the meantime, Kamata, Kaneda and Matsuda, three yakuza affiliated to the Murata family, accidently kill Tachibana, the head of the Seiryu clan. To conceal the evidence and save their skins, they decide to bury the body.

But the Seiryu clan soon gets wind of Tachibana's death, and comes looking for revenge. The Murata gang have to run for their lives. While they're still trying to decide on a course of action, they bump into Yamasaki who, stricken by remorse, offers to give them the loot on condition they kill him afterwards. The four set off to pick up the swag but, when they reach the hiding place, it turns out to be at the same spot where Kamata and the others buried Tachibana's body…
